Annual Website Review
Why is it important to review your website annually?
Search Terms in Google Change
Periodically, the way people search for things on the internet will change. So, it's important that websites are reviewed and updated accordingly so they can continue to be found in Google Search and others.
Backup and Restoration Testing
Not to sound paranoid, but while it's important and vital to have a website backup and restoration system in place, it's only good if it works. Therefore, performing an annual (at minimum) backup and restoration “test” is highly recommended. This way, if anything were to cause the website to go down or get hacked, knowing that the website “can” be properly restored to a recent backup will allow everyone to sleep better at night.
Fix Website Issues
It’s concerning if your website seems to be having even somewhat insignificant problems. For example, webpages or images that seem to load slowly or if elements don't always appear as you’d expect, are essential items that should be addressed as soon as possible. Navigation or usability issues of your website, such as if Google isn't indexing essential website pages, or if visitors coming to your website find it hard to locate what they are looking for, are also problems that should be addressed quickly. Additionally, if miscellaneous errors seem to be showing up on your website for no apparent reason or if website pages on your site keep crashing or become unavailable from time to time, these are all vitally important situations that need to be resolved quickly. These types of problems can all be signs of various underlying issues and indicate that your website should be looked at and reviewed sooner than later.
Updated Business Branding
Typically, businesses will periodically update their branding, including logos, images, and even color schemes, from time to time. Therefore it's recommended that an annual review of the website be performed, in order to make sure that everything is still matching up with the current company branding.
Updated Website Usability
Throughout the year, every year, content on a website will often change. Words and images change, links change, links can become broken, page names will change, etc. If unchecked regularly, it's likely that website visitors may not be able to find what they are looking for AND links on Google and other sites may stop working. So checking your website annually, or even more often, is recommended to make sure that the usability and accessibility (in all browsers) will remain functioning properly.
Preventative Website Maintenance
Don't wait for your customers or website visitors to email or phone you to say “Hey, what's wrong with your website.” It's a much better practice to proactively review and look over your website on a regular basis to ensure that you avoid problems that can bring your website down or cause serious or even not-so-serious website problems. A free website review is a perfect way to start. The objective is to identify potential website issues before problems can and may occur.
